MEMORY AND GENERATIONAL BOUNDARIES: PATTERNS OF PERCEIVING HISTORICAL REALITY IN THE NOVEL «THE SPIES» BY MARCEL BAYER ;
Literary process of any nation is closely connected with the historical events and political views of the country, since they play an important role in the formation of social consciousness. In this line of reasoning, the historical context determines the content and themes of artistic works. German society faces the challenge of working up the historical experience and re-interpreting the recent past. Different texts, which appeared at the end of the 20th century and have entered the literary fi eld at the beginning of the 21st century, affi rm the topicality of this problem. The year of 1995 is particularly an important period, considered as the year of transformation from the historical «eventful» themes of the 20th century to the reconsideration of those events not only by immediate participants but also by the witnesses who gained information from their parents or relatives. Marcel Beyer, a contemporary German writer, represents the generation of grandchildren who make efforts to re-commence the contact between generations, to reconcile them, to centralize individual memory and to separate it from the dissemination of the political model of German collective memory. Marcel Beyer's «Spione» (Spies) is a 2000 novel, united with his novels «Flughunde» (Flying dogs), published in 1995, and «Kaltenburg» (Kaltenburg), printed in 2008, by common thematic motives, especially with regard to the search of historical signs of Germany. Choosing the detective paradigm for the structure of the novel, the author reveals the important social processes of his era in the metaphorical form, connected with analyzing and interpretation of the past. The narrator's family is a diminutive model of the postwar society, which is represented by three generations: grandparents, children and grandchildren. At the fi rst glance, the events in the family life are not so much related to the «great history», they rather reveal the change in the German consciousness and the search for a new identity in the formation of a new paradigm in the perception of the past among Germans. In the novel written by the German, a war is conceptualized by the image of the Old because of its mystery and mystical essence. Thus, by using in his novel «Spies» the example of family relationships and the abstract image of the Old, Beyer depicts the metaphorical embodiment of the ways of perceiving the war and explicates the «interrupted» connection between generations.
